Supervisory Responsibilities: Volunteer music ensembles and contracted musicians

Job Summary: The Director of Music & Worship Ministries is responsible for cultivating a multi-sensory, theologically sound, and participatory worship experience through the utilization of available resources, talent, and facilities at Lakewood United Methodist Church in collaboration with the Pastor and Associate Director of Music so that space for encounters with God is made for the congregation that leads them deeper into their faith and sends them out into the world in mission.
Essential Functions:
Leading singing and other acts of worship when the congregation gathers.
Creation or curation of worship resources including but not limited to writing, visuals, media, and/or music literature.
Making theologically sound decisions related to choosing music the congregation will participate in that spans a range of styles.
Collaboration with the Pastor and Associate Director of Music on the long-range planning of worship.
Serving as staff support for the Worship Team at Lakewood UMC and assisting them in growing in their ministry.
Organizing, maintaining, and optimizing the music equipment and other worship resources in the church.
Overseeing and developing the worship ministry budget including fundraising if necessary.
Developing music ensembles with existing music talent in the congregation and helping the church budget for and create an in-house band.
Participation in the music ministry of the church with a primary instrument.
Conducting and rehearsing the choir.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
A bachelors degree in a music-related field
Excellence in a primary instrument
The ability to lead singing
The ability to conduct and lead an ensemble
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and move objects up to 25 lbs
Ability to drive a vehicle

Musicianship: The Director of Worship Ministries will be a fundamental part of the music ministry of the church. They will demonstrate excellence in their primary instrument, an ethic of self-improvement through regular practice and a willingness to collaborate and make music in a broad range of ensembles
Pedagogy: The Director of Music & Worship Ministries Demonstrates strong teaching ability that cultivates musicianship and excellence in music making in the ensembles they lead
Theology: The Director of Music & Worship Ministries will root their work in theological principles as well as musical and will need to understand United Methodist theology specifically.
Congregational Song: The Director of Music & Worship Ministries will be expected to demonstrate a broad fluency with congregational singing ranging in style, from traditional to modern; culture, from US-centric to songs from outside of the US; and accessibility, from something that requires no teaching, to songs that might require a rehearsal with a congregation before they begin singing it. They will also be expected to continuously engage in professional development as it relates to the songs that the Christian church is singing.
Organization: he Director of Music & Worship Ministries will have a wide range of responsibilities that will require organizational skills to keep things running smoothly and to reduce clutter and chaos in the various areas over which they will have authority.
Interpersonal: he Director of Music & Worship Ministries will be a part of a team and is expected to engage collegially and respectfully with co-workers using direct communication and honest feedback when appropriate. They will demonstrate the ability to manage conflict with equanimity and patience.
Spiritual Maturity: he Director of Music & Worship Ministries will have a strong personal depth and spiritual grounding in their faith, will demonstrate integrity by “walking the talk,” will be an authentic and trustworthy leader, will seek the guidance of appropriate mentors, and can articulate a clear and consistent theology.
Pastoral Care: The Director of Music & Worship Ministries will work with a wide range of people and will demonstrate an invitational posture for conversations of a spiritual nature, maintain appropriate Pastoral and professional boundaries that respect their own limitations as a care provider, respect confidences, and refer congregants to the pastor when it is appropriate and/or necessary.
