Title: Associate Director of Music

Salary: $12,000-$15,000

Status: part-time; ~10 hours a week

FLSA: non-exempt

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Reports to: Director of Worship and Music

Effective: January 27, 2025

Job Summary: The Associate Director of Music provides keyboard (piano and organ) support to music in worship, collaborates with the Director of Worship and Music and the Pastor to plan worship, supports ensemble rehearsals when a keyboard is needed, and supports congregational singing in worship.

Essential Functions:

  • Playing piano and organ to support music and congregational singing in worship.

  • Supporting rehearsal from piano/organ of music ensembles

  • Collaborating with other staff to assist in worship planning

  • Providing incidental music in worship from piano and/or organ including but not limited to Preludes, Postludes, and music that underscores the movement of the liturgy.

  • Overseeing ongoing maintenance of Piano in Organ in consultation with Director of Music and Worship

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelors degree in a music-related field

  • Excellence in piano and organ playing

  • A general understanding of worship practices, especially in the United Methodist Church

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to drive a vehicle

  • Ability to sit and rise, unassisted, from an organ console that has pedals

  • Ability to play pedals competently with feet

They will demonstrate excellence in their primary instrument, an ethic of self-improvement through regular practice and a willingness to collaborate and make music in a broad range of ensembles

  • Intuition: The Associate Director of Music will demonstrate the ability to “go with the flow” in worship and be able to respond to unexpected situations as they occur musically.

  • Improvisation: The Associate Director of Music will demonstrate the ability to improvise on their primary instrument, playing music that isn’t necessarily on paper in front of them but is nonetheless responsive and engaging with the moment

  • Interpersonal: The Associate Director of Music will be a part of a team and is expected to engage collegially and respectfully with co-workers using direct communication and honest feedback when appropriate. They will demonstrate the ability to manage conflict with equanimity and patience.

  • Spiritual Maturity: The Associate Director of Music will have a strong personal depth and spiritual grounding in their faith, will demonstrate integrity by “walking the talk,” will be an authentic and trustworthy leader, and will seek the guidance of appropriate mentors.
